FLOWN vs Focusmate: The Real Difference Is Not Price, It Is What Happens Between Sessions

Quick Picks

Focusmate if you know how to start once someone is watching and just need the accountability. FLOWN if the getting-started part is fine but you burn out by the third session of the day and need recovery built in.

I already compared these two, along with Flow Club, in the original body doubling roundup. This is the deeper version, because the two-line summary in a three-way comparison undersold what actually separates FLOWN from Focusmate, and it is not what most reviews say.

Every comparison of these two leads with price. Focusmate is cheaper. FLOWN costs more. That framing misses the thing that matters more for ADHD brains specifically: what happens in the gaps.

What Focusmate actually is

Focusmate

Free (3 sessions/week) — $12/month or $8/month yearly, unlimited

One-to-one virtual coworking, camera on, 25-75 minute sessions, book and go

  • Web
  • iOS
  • Android

Best for: Brains that just need one witness and no additional structure

Try Focusmate

Focusmate is the stripped-down version of body doubling. You book a session, you are paired with one other person, you state what you are working on, you work in silence with cameras on, you check in at the end. That is the entire product. No facilitator, no group, no content beyond the accountability mechanism itself.

The reason this works for some ADHD brains: there is nothing between you and the task. The commitment of a booked session with a real stranger watching is the entire intervention, and for task initiation specifically, that is often exactly enough. Nothing to configure, nothing to learn, no session format to choose.

The reason it does not work for others: Focusmate offers nothing once the session ends. No recovery structure, no transition support, no acknowledgment that doing four of these back to back is a genuinely different experience from doing one. If you burn out mid-afternoon and cannot explain why, Focusmate has no mechanism to help you notice the pattern, let alone address it.

Friction Score

More dots = easier. Fewer dots = more demanding.

  • Setup friction

Account to first booked session in under ten minutes. Free tier needs no card.

  • Daily friction

Each session requires booking and showing up on camera. That commitment is the mechanism, and also the cost.

  • Recovery friction

No streaks, no guilt structure. After time away you book a session and you are back.

What FLOWN actually is

Free trial: 30 days

Best for: Brains that start fine but need recovery built into the structure, not left to chance

FLOWN sits in the same category as Focusmate — pair-or-group virtual coworking for accountability — but it adds something the reviews consistently undersell: session variety that treats recovery as part of the work, not an afterthought.

Alongside standard focus sessions, FLOWN runs recharge sessions and breathwork sessions, facilitated rather than silent, in small groups rather than one-to-one. The practical effect for ADHD brains specifically: instead of stacking four silent focus sessions and wondering why you feel wrung out by 3pm, you can structure a day that alternates focus and recovery, with a facilitator holding the format so you do not have to design it yourself.

This matters more for ADHD than it sounds. Emotional and cognitive depletion after sustained focus is common and often goes unrecognised as depletion. It just feels like the day going wrong. A tool that explicitly builds a recharge block into the middle of a work day is naming a real need most productivity tools ignore entirely.

The honest trade-offs: FLOWN costs roughly double Focusmate’s unlimited tier, and the facilitated group format is a different social experience from Focusmate’s one-to-one — better for some ADHD brains, more exposing for others. If groups drain you rather than energise you, this is the wrong format regardless of the recovery sessions. To FLOWN’s credit, the 30-day trial genuinely requires no credit card, which lowers the bar to actually finding out.

Friction Score

More dots = easier. Fewer dots = more demanding.

  • Setup friction

No card required for the 30-day trial. Straightforward onboarding, dense session calendar visible from the first login.

  • Daily friction

Abundant session times make booking easy. Choosing between focus and recharge session types adds a small decision each time.

  • Recovery friction

Nothing punishes a lapse, but a trial that converts to a real subscription without a card on file is one you need to actively cancel or actively continue — know which one you meant to do.

The comparison nobody else makes properly

Most reviews frame this as budget versus premium. That is true as far as it goes and it is not the useful distinction for ADHD brains choosing between them.

The useful distinction: does your problem live in starting, or in sustaining?

If your wall is task initiation specifically — you know what to do, you just cannot make yourself begin — Focusmate’s stripped mechanism is enough. Adding recovery sessions to a tool you would use for one 50-minute block a day solves a problem you do not have.

If your wall is that you start fine but the day falls apart by mid-afternoon, and you have never quite been able to name why, FLOWN’s structure is answering a question Focusmate does not even ask.

Neither is more “for ADHD” than the other. They are built around two different ADHD experiences that get lumped together under the same diagnosis and are, in practice, quite different problems.

The honest recommendation

Try Focusmate’s free tier first regardless of which description sounds like you. Three sessions a week costs nothing and tells you within a fortnight whether body doubling works for your brain at all.

If it works and you still find yourself depleted by the sessions rather than energised, that is the specific signal to try FLOWN’s trial next. The recharge and breathwork sessions are solving a problem Focusmate cannot see, because Focusmate was never built to look for it.
